Donald Trump

India is closely analyzing President Donald Trump’s declaration regarding the US’s choice to acquire diesel from Russia, all while facing the looming threat of 100 percent tariffs from Washington under the Russia and Iran Sanctions Act for its own purchases of Russian oil.

Trump’s choice to acquire diesel from Russia might not directly breach the Russia and Iran Sanctions Act, and it’s possible that Washington will create a workaround for itself, according to senior sources who requested anonymity. This decision to buy Russian diesel while penalizing India for its Russian oil purchases could seem contradictory. Nevertheless, the Trump administration might establish an exception to facilitate its plan to import Russian diesel, the sources clarified.

India is meticulously evaluating Trump’s recent declaration and its potential effects on the nation’s energy acquisitions from Moscow, according to informed sources. Although Trump’s conversation with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 30 was characterized as positive, the Trump administration has yet to reach a definitive conclusion regarding any exemptions under the Russia and Iran Sanctions Act (SRIA).

In recent discussions with the United States, New Delhi has articulated to its counterparts that imposing sanctions on India under the SRIA would negatively impact their already delicate bilateral relationship, which has been further complicated by the slow progress in finalizing a trade agreement and the strengthening ties between the US and Pakistan.

As part of the arrangement with President Vladimir Putin, Russia is set to deliver over 300,000 tonnes of diesel immediately, with an additional 500,000 tonnes scheduled for November, followed by 1 million tonnes “right after that,” and potentially another 3 million tonnes, contingent on refinery capabilities, as stated by the US President.

The move is being seen as an outreach to American voters ahead of the midterm elections.

Between our TOTAL CONTROL of the Strait of Hormuz and this great announcement on Russian energy, diesel prices for Americans and, indeed, the world will be COMING DOWN, IN ACHIEVING UNPRECEDENTED SAVINGS NOW! My top priority is to ensure lower prices for all Americans, particularly our hardworking farmers, ranchers, and truckers. This is a significant and crucial announcement, as stated by President Donald Trump on Truth Social.

Fuel prices for diesel have surged in both the US and Europe due to supply challenges in the Hormuz Strait. Additionally, ongoing attacks on Russia’s oil and gas facilities have made the situation even more complex. Trump has also suggested that the Ukrainian president reconsider the strategy of targeting Russia’s oil infrastructure.
