The United States Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, is set to embark on a five-day journey to India starting this Saturday. His visit will emphasise discussions on energy collaboration, strategic partnerships, and commercial investments with Indian officials and business leaders.
From October 17 to 22, Rubio will explore Mumbai and Jamnagar as part of a broader itinerary that also includes Uzbekistan, as announced by the US State Department on Tuesday. This marks his second official trip to India within the year.

In India, Rubio will meet senior government officials to “strengthen the US-India strategic partnership, exchange views on regional and global dynamics, and discuss prospects for enhanced energy cooperation”, the department said.
He will also meet business leaders “to promote opportunities for commercial investment and economic cooperation”, the department’s statement said.

Energy Collaboration Under Scrutiny
Rubio’s upcoming visit highlights the ongoing tensions between New Delhi and Washington regarding trade and energy relations. Recent discussions on a bilateral trade agreement have encountered new setbacks, with officials from both nations acknowledging earlier this month that attempts to finalise the deal have once again hit a standstill.
India has expressed apprehensions about proposed US legislation that might empower President Donald Trump to impose tariffs as high as 100% on nations acquiring Russian energy. This move is part of Washington’s strategy to exert pressure on Moscow amid its conflict in Ukraine.
While India momentarily scaled back its imports of Russian energy in early 2026, these purchases have surged since then, especially in light of disruptions to global energy supplies linked to the US-Israeli conflict with Iran.
Economic Relations and Strategic Partnerships
Senator Rubio’s upcoming visit follows a challenging period in US-India relations, characterised by tensions over tariffs, energy transactions, and President Trump’s assertions of facilitating a ceasefire between India and Pakistan.
Additionally, the US faced backlash from New Delhi after a military strike on a vessel near Oman resulted in the deaths of three Indian sailors.
Rubio’s previous trip to India in May involved visits to four cities over four days. This latest journey is anticipated to foster discussions on mutual regional and global issues, as well as enhance economic collaboration.
Exploring Uzbekistan with a Business Delegation
Prior to his journey to India, Senator Rubio will make a stop in the historic city of Samarkand, Uzbekistan, to engage in a ministerial meeting that includes representatives from five Central Asian nations: Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan.
He will spearhead a delegation comprising over 200 prominent US business leaders, as stated by the State Department, emphasising this trip as a significant opportunity to bolster commercial ties with this resource-abundant region.
This visit comes on the heels of President Trump’s previous discussions with the leaders of these five Central Asian countries at the White House last November.
