New agreements signed during Prime Minister Modi's visit aim to strengthen clean energy cooperation and long-term energy security

India and Australia have taken another step towards strengthening their strategic energy partnership with the signing of new agreements on liquefied natural gas (LNG) and uranium supply during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s official visit to Australia. The agreements are expected to support India’s growing energy needs while expanding cooperation in clean energy, critical minerals and low-carbon technologies.

The two countries agreed to enhance long-term collaboration in LNG trade, ensuring a stable and reliable supply of natural gas to India as demand for cleaner transition fuels continues to rise. The partnership is expected to improve energy security and diversify India’s import sources while reinforcing Australia’s position as a key energy supplier in the Indo-Pacific region.

India and Australia also finalized arrangements to strengthen cooperation in the peaceful use of nuclear energy through uranium supplies. The move will support India’s expanding nuclear power programme, which is expected to play a larger role in meeting the country’s clean energy and net-zero ambitions.

Beyond conventional energy, both nations committed to expanding collaboration in renewable energy, green hydrogen, critical minerals, battery technologies and clean energy innovation. The leaders also discussed opportunities to build resilient supply chains for minerals such as lithium, cobalt and rare earth elements that are essential for electric vehicles and renewable energy technologies.

Prime Minister Modi said the growing energy partnership reflects the strong strategic relationship between the two democracies and will contribute to economic growth, energy security and sustainable development. Australian leaders also reaffirmed their commitment to supporting India’s clean energy transition through technology sharing, investment and long-term resource partnerships.
