Oil and Gas

In a strategic move to reinforce regional energy security, India is advancing plans to supply oil and gas to Mauritius under a government-to-government agreement, as geopolitical tensions in West Asia continue to disrupt global energy flows.

The development was announced by External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar during his visit to Port Louis, where he underscored the importance of strengthening bilateral cooperation in the energy sector. The agreement, currently being finalised, is expected to play a critical role in ensuring stable fuel supplies for the island nation.

The urgency of the partnership is closely tied to the ongoing West Asia crisis, which has impacted key global oil transit routes, particularly the Strait of Hormuz. Disruptions in this corridor, through which a significant share of global oil trade passes, have heightened concerns over supply security and price volatility for energy-importing nations.

India’s initiative reflects a broader shift in its energy diplomacy, positioning itself not only as a major consumer but also as a reliable regional supplier during times of crisis. The move is expected to provide Mauritius with a dependable energy lifeline, mitigating risks associated with global supply chain disruptions.

Beyond conventional fuel supplies, the India–Mauritius partnership is also expanding into clean energy collaboration. Ongoing initiatives include solar power projects, electric mobility solutions, and cooperation through global platforms such as the International Solar Alliance, highlighting a dual-track approach that balances immediate energy needs with long-term sustainability goals.

The proposed agreement further reinforces the “Enhanced Strategic Partnership” between the two countries, deepening ties across energy, maritime security, and infrastructure. It also signals India’s growing role in supporting smaller economies in navigating energy challenges amid an increasingly uncertain geopolitical environment.
