In a strategic move to accelerate India’s clean energy transition, NTPC Limited has signed a non-binding Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with France-based Électricité de France (EDF) to jointly explore the development of nuclear power projects in the country.
The agreement, formalised following approvals from relevant government ministries, establishes a collaborative framework to assess opportunities for deploying nuclear energy infrastructure at scale.
As part of the partnership, both companies will evaluate the feasibility of advanced nuclear technologies, including EDF’s European Pressurised Reactor (EPR) technology, and explore its suitability within India’s regulatory and operational landscape. The collaboration also aims to identify potential project sites, assess economic frameworks, and promote localisation of manufacturing for large-scale deployment, key factors in strengthening domestic capabilities in the nuclear energy segment.
This development underscores India’s growing emphasis on diversifying its energy mix with low-carbon baseload power sources such as nuclear energy. It also reflects NTPC’s broader strategy to expand beyond conventional thermal generation and build a robust clean energy portfolio through global partnerships.
