To address the pressing issues of emissions and energy consumption in conventional road and infrastructure construction, two leading organisations have come together to explore advanced road-building technologies. The traditional hot mix asphalt method requires significant heating of bitumen and aggregates, resulting in substantial energy use and emissions during both production and application.
Renowned speciality chemicals company LANXESS has partnered with Hindustan Colas Private Limited (HINCOL) to investigate pioneering road construction technologies aimed at reducing energy consumption, minimising emissions, and supporting sustainable infrastructure development in India.

Their main emphasis is on warm mix asphalt technology, which allows for road laying at lower temperatures. This partnership aims to enhance energy efficiency, decrease emissions, and encourage more environmentally friendly paving practices.
A key aspect of their collaboration is the investigation of Addipave WM 23, a cutting-edge warm mix asphalt additive created by LANXESS. Through joint trials and market strategies, the companies seek to lower the temperatures needed for asphalt production and paving, while still meeting essential road performance criteria. By reducing these operational temperatures, they can greatly decrease energy usage and emissions linked to asphalt production and application, resulting in better working conditions for employees.

Additionally, the partnership will explore Addipave CR 36, LANXESS’ innovative cross-linking technology for Polymer Modified Bitumen (PMB) applications. Both laboratory and commercial-scale evaluations will be carried out to reveal its potential to enhance production efficiency, maintain product consistency, improve quality, and bolster operational safety.
LANXESS will provide essential materials, impart their expertise, and assist with trials, while HINCOL will contribute testing facilities, operational support, and tailored performance assessments suited to the Indian landscape.
Utilising their expert insights in additive technologies, advancements in bitumen, and road engineering, these companies are dedicated to advancing eco-friendly paving techniques that address India’s growing infrastructure needs while emphasising sustainability and reducing environmental impact.
“India’s infrastructure is continuously seeking innovative solutions that improve road longevity and support sustainability objectives,” stated Neelanjan Banerjee, Senior Vice President and Global Head of the Business Unit Lubricant Additives at LANXESS.
Debashis Chakraverty, the CEO and Director of HINCOL, highlighted the essential nature of collaboration, stating, “The two organisations will delve into innovative technologies that have the potential to greatly enhance pavement performance, promote sustainability, and provide lasting advantages to the Indian road construction industry.”
