Indian Energy Exchange Reports

On Thursday, October 29, Indian Energy Exchange Ltd (IEX) unveiled its financial results for the July-September quarter of the 2026-27 fiscal year (Q2 FY27), showcasing a remarkable 12.9% year-on-year (YoY) increase in consolidated net profit, reaching ₹139.24 crore. This impressive growth was fuelled by a surge in electricity trading volumes, driven by robust power demand and escalating prices in the spot market.

In the corresponding period of the preceding fiscal year, the company had logged a profit of ₹123.35 crore, according to a regulatory filing.

The consolidated revenue from operations saw a growth of 8.6% year-on-year, reaching ₹167.1 crore for the quarter in question, compared to ₹153.92 crore in the second quarter of the 2025-26 fiscal year (Q2 FY26).

Additionally, electricity trading volumes surged by 12.7%, totalling 39.7 billion units (BUs), according to a statement from the exchange.

In the initial six months of FY27, the consolidated net profit experienced a robust growth of 12.3% year-on-year, reaching ₹274 crore, while revenue saw an increase of 9.9% year-on-year, totalling ₹324.97 crore. Electricity trading volumes surged by 14.2%, amounting to 77.2 billion units (BUs).

According to IEX, power demand across India soared by 11.5% year-on-year, hitting a record high of 502 BUs in the September quarter. This surge was largely attributed to the heightened temperatures linked to El Niño and insufficient monsoon rainfall. In the first half of the fiscal year, demand grew by 10.2%, reaching 897 BUs, bolstered by industrial activities and increased irrigation needs.

Amidst a surge in demand, IEX’s Day-Ahead Market saw a remarkable increase in the average market-clearing price, soaring by 46% year-on-year to ₹5.7 per unit this quarter. In parallel, the Real-Time Market experienced a 49% hike, with prices reaching ₹5.2 per unit.

Elevated spot prices can motivate both generators and buyers to engage in trading via exchanges; however, the actual trading volumes are influenced by factors such as electricity availability, fuel expenses, and the procurement strategies of distribution utilities.

The power market encountered challenges related to fuel supply. Domestic coal production dipped by 1% year-on-year, totalling approximately 445 million tonnes in the first half of FY27. As of October 22, coal inventories stood at nearly eight days’ worth of consumption, while around 100 power plants reported critical stock levels of about three days, according to IEX.

The interplay between rising electricity demand and limited coal supply underscores the critical need for effective market-driven power procurement, especially during times of weather-induced demand surges.

On Thursday, October 29, shares of IEX finished the day up by 2.57%, reaching ₹105.35 per unit on the National Stock Exchange (NSE). Notably, the results were disclosed after market hours.

As of October 29, 2026, the Indian Energy Exchange boasts a total market capitalisation of ₹9,393.98 crore, as reported by the NSE
