Chhattisgarh has approved its Compressed Biogas Policy 2026, marking a fresh push to convert agricultural residue, cattle dung and other organic waste into clean fuel while opening up new income opportunities in rural areas. The policy was cleared at a state Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai and is aimed at building a structured compressed biogas, or CBG, ecosystem across the state.
The new policy focuses on the scientific use of crop residue, livestock waste, municipal organic waste and other biodegradable resources to produce compressed biogas, which can be used as a cleaner substitute for conventional fossil fuels. The state government estimates that Chhattisgarh has the potential to produce nearly 5 lakh tonnes of compressed biogas annually by tapping its available biomass and organic waste resources.
Beyond clean energy generation, the policy is expected to create an additional revenue stream for farmers through the sale of crop residue and agricultural waste that would otherwise remain underutilised. The government also expects the rollout of CBG plants to generate local jobs, support entrepreneurship and strengthen the rural economy by creating a value chain around waste collection, processing and biofuel production.
Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai said the policy would create new opportunities for farmers, cattle rearers and rural communities by ensuring better use of agricultural and organic waste. The state has positioned the initiative as part of a broader effort to promote cleaner energy sources, improve waste management practices and reduce dependence on conventional fuels.
The policy also signals Chhattisgarh’s intent to emerge as a stronger player in India’s bioenergy space at a time when several states are looking to expand compressed biogas production under the wider clean energy transition. If implemented effectively, the new framework could help the state build a more organised waste-to-energy ecosystem while linking climate goals with rural development and income generation.
