A sharp escalation in geopolitical tensions has triggered significant disruption in global energy markets, as the United States imposed a naval blockade targeting Iranian ports, constraining oil flows through the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.

The blockade follows the breakdown of diplomatic talks between the US and Iran and is aimed at curbing Iran’s oil exports and increasing economic pressure on Tehran. The move has intensified tensions in the region, with Iran warning of potential retaliation and escalation.

The Strait of Hormuz, a critical global energy chokepoint through which nearly one-fifth of the world’s oil and gas supplies transit, has been severely impacted. The blockade has disrupted tanker movement, with congestion and delays affecting shipments across global markets. 

According to industry estimates, the action could halt around 2 million barrels per day of Iranian oil exports, further tightening supply in an already volatile market. Hundreds of tankers carrying millions of barrels of crude are reportedly stranded or delayed in the Gulf due to heightened security risks. 

The impact on oil prices has been immediate, with crude surging past $100 per barrel amid fears of prolonged disruption. Analysts warn that continued instability could exacerbate inflationary pressures and strain energy-importing economies, particularly in Asia.

While the US has indicated that the blockade primarily targets vessels linked to Iranian ports, the broader implications for global shipping, insurance costs, and supply chains remain significant.
