India’s clean energy transition gathered strong momentum in 2025, with renewable power generation reaching a record high and significantly reducing reliance on fossil fuel-based electricity, according to a new report by Ember.
The report highlights that renewables, including solar, wind, hydro, and bioenergy, accounted for an unprecedented share of India’s electricity mix, driven by rapid capacity additions and improved grid integration. This growth played a crucial role in curbing the share of coal-based power generation, marking a notable shift in the country’s energy trajectory.
A key driver of this expansion has been the surge in solar capacity, supported by competitive tariffs, large-scale project development, and policy backing. Wind energy also contributed steadily, while hydro and other renewables added to the overall clean energy mix.
According to Ember, the trend reflects structural changes in India’s power sector, including improved transmission infrastructure, greater flexibility in grid management, and increased participation from private developers. These factors have enabled higher absorption of variable renewable energy into the grid.

The report also highlights the role of policy initiatives and government targets, including India’s ambition to achieve 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030. Continued investments in storage, transmission, and hybrid projects will be critical to sustaining this growth momentum.
