India is stepping up coal supplies to thermal power plants as rising electricity demand and seasonally lower production have tightened fuel stocks at several generating stations. The government has directed coal companies to strengthen dispatches, including by improving loading operations at key subsidiaries of Coal India.

Northern Coalfields, Central Coalfields and South Eastern Coalfields have been asked to enhance coal loading as part of efforts to ensure adequate supplies to the power sector. The move comes at a time when monsoon conditions have affected mining and transportation in some coal-producing regions, while electricity demand has remained elevated.

Coal India has maintained higher supply levels despite production pressures. Its coal supplies increased 5.5% year-on-year in August to around 60.6 million tonnes (MT) from 57.4 MT a year earlier. Cumulative supplies during April-August FY27 rose 6.7% to 322.9 MT, compared with 302.6 MT in the corresponding period last year.

The stronger dispatches are particularly important as thermal power generation continues to account for a substantial share of India’s electricity mix. Government data cited in recent reports showed that 45 coal-fired power plants had critically low inventories as of August 25, with several plants holding stocks below prescribed levels or having less than three days of generation requirement.

The stock pressure has emerged alongside strong electricity consumption, with higher cooling requirements contributing to demand during the summer and monsoon period. At the same time, heavy rainfall in major coal-producing states has affected mining and movement of coal, creating additional pressure on the supply chain.

The government’s latest intervention is aimed at balancing these pressures by increasing mine-level loading and ensuring that coal reaches power stations more efficiently. With Coal India’s pithead inventory still providing an important buffer, higher dispatches could help stabilise stocks at generating stations as mining conditions improve after the monsoon.

The developments underline the continuing importance of coal in India’s power security even as renewable energy capacity expands rapidly. Maintaining reliable fuel availability at thermal plants remains critical for meeting peak electricity requirements and supporting grid stability during periods when renewable generation is variable.
