In a record-breaking development, solar energy accounted for 10% of global electricity generation in April 2025—the highest monthly share in history and the first time it has overtaken nuclear power, according to data from Ember’s Electricity Data Explorer.
The report reveals that solar energy became the fourth-largest source of global electricity during April 2025, surpassing both wind and nuclear for the first time. The top three sources of global electricity for the month were coal, gas, and hydro.
Ember’s analysis confirms that “solar power reached 10% of global power generation for the first month on record,” signalling a significant transformation in the global energy mix and reflecting accelerating solar adoption across key regions.
The data also highlights major regional milestones. In China, the combined share of electricity generated by wind and solar reached 26% in April—another first—indicating that over a quarter of the nation’s power came from renewable sources in a single month.
