The Indian Energy Exchange (IEX), recognised as the leading electricity exchange in India, achieved a remarkable monthly traded electricity volume of 13,092 MUs in October 2026, reflecting a significant year-on-year growth of 16.5%.
Government statistics reveal that India’s energy consumption reached 159.8 BUs in October 2026, marking an impressive year-on-year increase of 21.9%. This surge in power demand propelled buy bids in the day-ahead market to soar by 265% compared to the previous year, leading to a rise in prices. The average market clearing price in the day-ahead market experienced a staggering 149% year-on-year increase, climbing from Rs 2.67/unit in October 2025 to Rs 6.66/unit in October 2026. This sharp rise can also be attributed to the low demand levels from the same month last year. In addition, the average market clearing price in the Real-Time Market reached Rs 5.78/unit in October 2026, reflecting a year-on-year increase of 112%.

Nevertheless, the interplay between demand and supply exhibited considerable fluctuations throughout October. The influence of warmer temperatures linked to El Niño, coupled with insufficient monsoon rainfall, spurred a robust demand for power in the initial weeks. Conversely, the latter part of the month saw a decline in demand due to cooler conditions, rainfall, and the repercussions of Cyclone Arnab. During times of diminished demand, an increase in supply liquidity led to nearly negligible prices in the Real-Time Market (RTM) across various time intervals.
