Hydrogen Hubs

In a strategic move to bolster its green energy ambitions, the Ministry of New & Renewable Energy (MNRE) has designated Kandla, Paradip, and Tuticorin ports as green hydrogen hubs, with 15 Indian states announcing dedicated policies to support green hydrogen development. This was announced by MNRE Secretary Santosh Kumar Sarangi during his address at the World Hydrogen Summit 2025 in Rotterdam.

These initiatives form a key part of India’s broader strategy to emerge as a global leader in green hydrogen production and exports, under the National Green Hydrogen Mission. Launched in 2023 with a financial outlay of $2.4 billion, the mission aims to produce 5 million metric tonnes (MMT) of green hydrogen annually by 2030.

The mission is expected to attract investments of up to $100 billion, create over 600,000 jobs, and prevent nearly 50 MMT of carbon dioxide emissions each year—significantly contributing to India’s climate and energy goals.

Highlighting India’s renewable energy progress, Sarangi noted that the country has already installed over 223 GW of renewable capacity, including 108 GW from solar and 51 GW from wind—placing India among the fastest-growing renewable energy markets globally.

To scale up production, the government has allocated green hydrogen production capacity of 862,000 tonnes per annum to 19 companies and awarded 3,000 MW per annum of electrolyser manufacturing capacity to 15 firms.

To further expedite the implementation of green hydrogen projects, the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change has granted exemption from environmental clearance for green hydrogen and green ammonia plants, enabling faster project execution and reduced regulatory delays.
