Solar Homes

Nagpur has emerged as one of India’s most remarkable rooftop solar success stories, recording an extraordinary surge in consumer adoption over the last ten years. The district’s rooftop solar consumer base has grown from just 236 users in 2016-17 to nearly 1.2 lakh consumers today, reflecting an increase of more than 50,000 percent and highlighting the rapid pace of renewable energy adoption in the region.

The growth is equally evident in installed capacity. Rooftop solar generation capacity in the district has expanded from 23.17 MW a decade ago to more than 726 MW, demonstrating how households, businesses, educational institutions, and industries are increasingly turning to solar power to meet their energy needs.

Industry observers attribute much of this momentum to the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, launched in 2024 to encourage residential rooftop solar installations through financial incentives. The scheme has significantly reduced upfront costs for consumers, making solar energy a viable option for a wider section of households. In fact, nearly three-fourths of Nagpur’s current rooftop solar consumers have joined the network since the scheme’s introduction.

Nagpur city accounts for the majority of the installations, while surrounding rural areas have also witnessed steady growth. The widespread adoption reflects increasing awareness about long-term electricity savings, energy independence, and environmental benefits associated with rooftop solar systems.

The district’s progress mirrors a broader national trend, with rooftop solar emerging as one of the fastest-growing segments of India’s renewable energy sector. Rising power demand, supportive government policies, and growing interest in clean energy solutions are encouraging consumers across the country to invest in decentralized solar generation.

Energy experts believe Nagpur’s experience could serve as a model for other urban centres looking to accelerate rooftop solar deployment. With continued policy support and technological advancements, rooftop solar is expected to play an increasingly important role in India’s transition towards a cleaner and more sustainable energy future.
