India’s flagship rooftop solar programme, PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, has achieved a significant milestone with more than 40 lakh households now equipped with rooftop solar systems across the country. The achievement was announced by Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi, who highlighted the rapid progress of the scheme in expanding access to clean and affordable energy.
The milestone reflects the growing adoption of rooftop solar among households and marks a major step towards India’s renewable energy and energy security goals.
Transforming Consumers into Energy Producers
Speaking about the achievement, Joshi said the scheme is changing the way households participate in the energy ecosystem by enabling citizens to generate their own electricity.
He noted that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the initiative is helping millions of families transition from being only electricity consumers to becoming electricity producers, while contributing to the country’s clean energy transition.
According to the minister, the programme is not only promoting renewable energy adoption but is also empowering households to play an active role in sustainable development.
Lower Electricity Bills for Households
One of the key benefits of the scheme has been the reduction in electricity expenses for participating families.
Beneficiaries are receiving government subsidies that significantly lower the cost of rooftop solar installations, making clean energy more accessible and affordable. As a result, many households are witnessing substantial savings on their monthly electricity bills.
Officials said the initiative is helping several families move closer to the goal of achieving near-zero electricity bills through self-generated solar power.
Ambitious Target of One Crore Households
Launched in February 2024, the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana was designed to accelerate rooftop solar adoption across India and expand the share of renewable energy in the country’s power mix.
The government has set a target of installing rooftop solar systems in one crore households by March 2027, making it one of the world’s largest residential solar programmes.
The achievement of 40 lakh installations represents significant progress towards this target and demonstrates growing public interest in clean energy solutions.
Supporting India’s Clean Energy Transition
The scheme is expected to play a crucial role in increasing India’s renewable energy capacity while reducing dependence on conventional power sources.
Apart from lowering household energy costs, widespread rooftop solar adoption is expected to contribute to reduced carbon emissions, improved energy security and greater self-reliance in electricity generation.
Industry experts believe the continued expansion of rooftop solar systems will strengthen India’s clean energy ecosystem and support the country’s long-term sustainability objectives.
