India’s electricity demand surged to an all-time high of 256.11 GW, as an intense heatwave gripped large parts of the country, significantly increasing power consumption and testing grid resilience.
Data from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) indicated that temperatures across several northern and central regions remained well above normal, with persistent heatwave conditions driving a sharp spike in cooling demand.
The new peak surpasses last year’s high of around 243 GW, reflecting a steep year-on-year rise in electricity consumption. The surge has been primarily led by increased usage of air conditioners, coolers, and agricultural pumping, particularly during peak afternoon hours.
To meet the elevated demand, thermal power plants have ramped up output, with coal-based generation forming the backbone of supply. At the same time, renewable energy, especially solar, has played a crucial role in meeting daytime peaks, contributing significantly to the overall power mix.
Officials noted that coal stocks at power plants remain at comfortable levels, helping avoid supply disruptions despite the surge. Improved coordination between central and state agencies, along with better demand forecasting, has also supported grid stability.
India’s installed power capacity currently exceeds 430 GW, with a growing share coming from non-fossil fuel sources. However, the sharp rise in peak demand highlights the increasing stress on infrastructure during extreme weather events.

The government expects peak demand to climb further to around 270 GW during the summer season, underscoring the need for continued investments in generation capacity, transmission networks, and energy storage systems.
