The proposed India–Sri Lanka oil pipeline project has gained renewed momentum following high-level discussions between the two countries, signalling a step forward in strengthening regional energy cooperation.
The project was a key agenda item during the visit of India’s Vice President, C. P. Radhakrishnan, where he met Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake. The discussions were further supported by diplomatic engagements involving Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, underscoring the strategic importance of the initiative.
The proposed pipeline aims to facilitate the transportation of petroleum products between India and Sri Lanka, enhancing supply reliability and reducing logistics costs. It is expected to play a crucial role in improving energy access for Sri Lanka while strengthening India’s position as a regional energy partner.
The project is part of a broader framework of bilateral energy cooperation, which includes the development of oil storage infrastructure, retail fuel networks, and renewable energy initiatives. Both countries are exploring integrated solutions to address energy security challenges amid global supply uncertainties.
For Sri Lanka, which has faced fuel shortages and economic stress in recent years, the pipeline could provide a more stable and cost-effective supply route. For India, the initiative aligns with its neighbourhood-first policy and efforts to build resilient energy linkages in the region.

Officials from both sides emphasised the need to fast-track feasibility assessments and implementation frameworks to move the project forward. The discussions also highlighted the importance of enhancing connectivity and infrastructure to support long-term energy collaboration.
