Maharashtra

Maharashtra has become the first state in the country to partner with the central government on a nuclear-based power generation initiative, according to PTI. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis confirmed that state utility Mahagenco has signed an MoU with the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL) to jointly develop nuclear power capacity in the state.

The agreement aims to enhance Maharashtra’s access to clean, reliable and round-the-clock power, which is increasingly critical as the state undergoes rapid industrial and digital expansion. Fadnavis noted that Maharashtra has emerged as a major data centre hub, hosting one of the largest shares of the country’s capacity, and this growing ecosystem requires a stable baseload energy supply that nuclear power can provide.

Under the partnership, Maharashtra will leverage NPCIL’s technological and operational expertise to plan and execute future nuclear projects. The collaboration also signals a wider policy shift by encouraging states to play a more active role in nuclear power development, a sector traditionally led exclusively by central public sector entities.

Officials stated that the initiative is aligned with national clean energy goals and will help diversify the state’s power mix while reducing dependence on fossil fuels over the long term. The MoU is expected to facilitate preparatory studies, project identification and capacity planning, setting the stage for potential large-scale nuclear installations in the coming years.
