Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath inaugurated the state’s first and India’s second green hydrogen plant at Khanimpur in Gorakhpur, built by the Ahmedabad-based Torrent Group. Developed jointly by Torrent Power and Torrent Gas, the facility has a production capacity of 72,000 tonnes per annum and is set to play a pivotal role in the state’s renewable energy roadmap.
Torrent Group announced that green hydrogen produced at the plant will be blended with natural gas, maintaining up to 2 per cent concentration, and distributed through its City Gas Distribution network in Gorakhpur. The blended fuel will reach households, CNG stations and industries via the existing pipeline network.
Speaking at the event, CM Yogi Adityanath described green hydrogen as the “energy of the future” and stressed its role in achieving Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Net Zero vision. He underlined the importance of tapping Uttar Pradesh’s abundant water resources for hydrogen production, noting that water is available at just 10 metres depth in several parts of the state.
The Chief Minister said the project will not only cut carbon emissions but also support innovation in the energy sector. He linked the initiative with health benefits, citing how smoke from wood and coal-based cooking contributes to diseases. Highlighting schemes like Ujjwala Yojana and cheaper LPG provisions, he said cleaner fuel access is central to protecting public health.
Yogi Adityanath reiterated that Uttar Pradesh has hydropower and thermal resources but lacks wind energy, making hydrogen a vital addition. The state has set a renewable energy target of 22,000 MW, with 6,000 MW already achieved. He expressed confidence that the cost of hydrogen energy will decline over time, similar to mobile phone technology.
Torrent Group Director Jinal Mehta praised the state’s investor-friendly policies, calling Uttar Pradesh a “red carpet, not red tape” destination. He said the Gorakhpur facility is not only UP’s first green hydrogen plant but also part of India’s largest city gas distribution project, enabling large-scale decarbonisation in transport and industry.
The inauguration was attended by senior leaders, MLAs and company officials, where CM Yogi also planted a Rudraksha sapling as a symbol of environmental commitment.
