Trump

In a significant development that could escalate trade tensions, U.S. President Donald Trump has announced an additional 25% tariff on a broad range of imports from India. The move is being seen as a direct response to India’s continued oil trade with Russia, despite repeated warnings from Washington.

The decision was formalised through an executive order signed by President Trump on Wednesday — just 14 hours before an earlier set of tariffs on Indian goods was scheduled to come into effect. With this additional levy, the total tariff burden on Indian exports to the U.S. will now rise to a substantial 50%, excluding a small exemption list.

According to the official timeline, the initial 25% tariff will be enforced from August 7, while the additional 25% duty will be implemented 21 days later, giving a brief window for Indian exporters and trade officials to reassess their strategies.

The move is likely to impact sectors such as textiles, automotive components, pharmaceuticals, and electronics, which form a major chunk of Indian exports to the United States. It may also strain diplomatic and economic ties between the two countries at a time when global trade dynamics are already fragile.
