India is preparing for a major expansion of its wind energy sector, with the government setting a target of 155 GW of installed wind power capacity by 2035. Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi announced the goal while highlighting the growing role of wind energy in meeting the country’s long-term clean energy ambitions.

At present, India’s installed wind energy capacity stands at over 56 GW. The government plans to increase this to 100 GW by 2030 before further scaling it up to 155 GW by 2035. The expansion is expected to make wind power one of the key pillars supporting India’s transition towards a low-carbon energy future.

To support this growth, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy has launched WT-MARUT, a dedicated digital platform designed to streamline the wind energy supply chain. The portal is expected to improve coordination among manufacturers, developers, suppliers, and other stakeholders, helping accelerate project execution and strengthen domestic manufacturing capabilities.

India has already emerged as one of the world’s leading wind energy markets and recorded its highest-ever annual wind capacity addition during FY26. The government believes continued policy support, improved transmission infrastructure, and stronger domestic manufacturing will help maintain this momentum in the years ahead.

Wind energy is expected to play a critical role in achieving India’s broader target of 500 GW of non-fossil fuel power capacity by 2030. Industry experts note that wind power complements solar energy by generating electricity during different periods of the day, helping create a more balanced and reliable renewable energy mix.

With ambitious capacity targets, growing investor interest, and a strengthening manufacturing ecosystem, India’s wind energy sector is poised for significant growth over the next decade, reinforcing the country’s position as a global renewable energy leader.
