Noida: In a significant step towards clean energy adoption, the Ministry of Defence has approved the development of a 250 MW solar power project with an integrated Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in Sitapur, Uttar Pradesh. The project will be established on approximately 850 acres of unused defence land, making it the first large-scale renewable energy initiative of its kind on defence-owned property in India.
The proposed facility is expected to play a key role in improving energy reliability for defence establishments while reducing dependence on conventional power sources. By combining solar generation with battery storage, the project will be able to provide a more stable and dependable electricity supply, even during periods when solar generation is low.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has cleared the project, which will be implemented by NTPC through a competitive bidding process aimed at securing cost-effective power solutions for defence installations. The project will be executed in coordination with the Ministry of Defence, Army Headquarters, and the Directorate General Defence Estates.
Officials believe the initiative will not only enhance long-term energy security for the armed forces but also generate substantial savings in electricity procurement costs over the project’s operational life. The move aligns with the government’s broader objective of increasing renewable energy deployment while ensuring efficient utilisation of public land assets.
Once operational, the Sitapur project is expected to rank among the country’s most significant renewable energy installations on defence land. Industry observers view it as a model that could encourage similar solar and energy storage projects across defence establishments nationwide, supporting both sustainability goals and national energy resilience.
