Renewable energy

India’s leading renewable energy state, Rajasthan, is facing a major infrastructure constriction, with nearly 60 GW of clean energy projects stalled due to inadequate transmission capacity, highlighting a critical challenge in the country’s energy transition.

According to recent developments, the delay stems from the inability of transmission planners, including the Central Transmission Utility of India Ltd (CTUIL), to identify and develop adequate evacuation infrastructure for the surge in renewable energy capacity. Despite receiving applications for grid connectivity totalling around 130 GW, transmission systems have been planned or are under development for only about 73 GW.

The issue is particularly significant given Rajasthan’s vast renewable potential, estimated at nearly 179 GW, and its dominance in India’s solar energy landscape. A large share of projects is concentrated in districts such as Barmer, Bikaner, Jaisalmer, and Jodhpur, further intensifying the pressure on existing transmission networks.

Industry experts note that the mismatch between rapid capacity addition and slower transmission expansion is emerging as a systemic risk. In many cases, developers are facing uncertainty over project viability, with regulators even allowing withdrawal of connectivity applications due to delays.

The challenge is not limited to project delays. Insufficient grid infrastructure has already led to renewable energy curtailment in the state, with reports indicating that a significant portion of generated power goes unused due to a lack of evacuation capacity and storage systems.

This bottleneck poses a serious challenge to India’s ambitious target of achieving 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030. While the government is investing in initiatives like the Green Energy Corridor and expanding inter-state transmission capacity, the pace of infrastructure development must accelerate significantly to keep up with the renewable energy pipeline.
