India’s City Gas Distribution (CGD) companies are recalibrating their business strategies, with a sharper focus on expanding the domestic Piped Natural Gas (PNG) segment, as global supply disruptions strain traditional gas sourcing.
The shift comes in response to tightening Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) supplies and rising prices triggered by the ongoing West Asia crisis. With import-dependent gas availability under pressure, CGD players are increasingly prioritising residential PNG connections to ensure stable and predictable demand.
Industry trends indicate that companies are accelerating pipeline infrastructure rollout and last-mile connectivity to households, aiming to deepen penetration in urban and semi-urban markets. This marks a strategic pivot from earlier emphasis on Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and industrial consumers
The move is also aligned with government policy direction. Authorities have been actively encouraging a transition from LPG to PNG to reduce dependence on imports and manage supply volatility. Regulatory measures, including faster approvals for city gas projects and directives to prioritise household connections, have further reinforced this shift.
To drive adoption, several CGD companies have introduced incentives such as waived connection charges and promotional benefits for residential users. The push is aimed at expanding the consumer base while ensuring consistent offtake in a constrained supply environment.

At the same time, policymakers have prioritised domestic PNG and CNG supplies to protect essential consumption, even as industrial users face supply adjustments. This highlights the growing role of city gas networks as a critical component of India’s energy security framework.
