Aditya Birla Renewables to Acquire Shell-Backed Sprng Energy in ₹17,200 Crore Deal

Aditya Birla Renewables Limited (ABRen), the renewable energy platform of the Aditya Birla Group, has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Shell-backed Sprng Energy in a deal valued at approximately ₹17,200 crore (US$1.8 billion). The acquisition is one of the largest transactions in India’s renewable energy sector and significantly expands the group’s clean energy footprint.

The acquisition will add around 5 GW of contracted renewable energy capacity to ABRen’s portfolio, including about 3.3 GW of operational solar and wind assets and 1.7 GW of projects under construction. Following the transaction, Aditya Birla Renewables’ total portfolio will grow to nearly 9.3 GW, placing it among the country’s major renewable energy developers.

The deal brings together ABRen’s strong presence in the commercial and industrial renewable energy segment with Sprng Energy’s utility-scale solar and wind projects. Industry experts believe the combined platform will strengthen the company’s ability to serve a wider customer base while accelerating the development of large clean energy projects across India.

Commenting on the acquisition, Kumar Mangalam Birla, Chairman of the Aditya Birla Group, said the investment reflects the group’s long-term commitment to India’s energy transition. He noted that the acquisition will strengthen the country’s energy security, enhance industrial competitiveness and create a strong foundation for future growth in the renewable energy sector.

The transaction, which is subject to regulatory approvals and customary closing conditions, is expected to be completed by the end of 2026. Once finalised, it will mark another significant milestone in India’s rapidly expanding renewable energy market, where large-scale investments continue to support the country’s target of achieving 500 GW of non-fossil fuel power capacity by 2030.
