Coal-to-SNG

NTPC Limited has signed a strategic agreement with Engineers India Limited (EIL) to develop a coal-to-synthetic natural gas (SNG) facility, marking a pivotal step in its clean-coal and energy diversification initiatives.

Under the pact, the facility’s feedstock will be high-ash domestic coal sourced from NTPC’s captive mines. This coal will be converted into synthetic natural gas, which can then be used to fuel NTPC’s gas-based power stations or for in-situ electricity generation, thereby enhancing flexibility and reducing reliance on imported fuels.

The project forms part of NTPC’s “Greening the Coal” strategy, led by its research arm NETRA (NTPC Energy Technology Research Alliance), which also encompasses carbon capture, utilisation and advanced coal-gasification technologies.

With an installed capacity of approximately 84 GW and around 30.9 GW under construction (including 13.3 GW of renewable energy), NTPC plays a major role in India’s power sector. This latest initiative underscores its ambition to enhance grid stability, diversify fuel sources and support India’s transition to a lower-carbon energy system.

The collaboration with EIL, a leading public-sector engineering, procurement and construction firm, is set to develop indigenous SNG technology at scale,  potentially creating a domestic value chain for cleaner coal utilisation and helping reduce import dependence.
