PM-KUSUM Scheme

Uttar Pradesh has taken another step towards expanding renewable energy capacity, with the Uttar Pradesh Electricity Regulatory Commission (UPERC) approving 57 power purchase agreements (PPAs) for grid-connected solar projects under the PM-KUSUM scheme.

The approved projects, with a combined capacity of 221.5 MW, will support the solarisation of agricultural feeders across multiple districts and contribute to the state’s efforts to provide cleaner and more reliable power for the agriculture sector.

57 Solar PPAs Cleared

The approvals were granted following petitions jointly submitted by the Uttar Pradesh New and Renewable Energy Development Agency (UPNEDA) and Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Limited (UPPCL).

Under the latest orders, UPERC approved 29 PPAs with a cumulative capacity of 165.5 MW in one petition and 28 PPAs totaling 56 MW in another. Together, the projects account for 221.5 MW of additional solar power capacity.

The projects have been awarded to MKC NOPL Green Energy Private Limited, a special purpose vehicle of NACOF OORJA Private Limited, under the Renewable Energy Service Company (RESCO) model. The generated electricity will be supplied to UPPCL through solar power plants connected to dedicated agricultural feeders.

Projects Spread Across Multiple Districts

The solar projects are located across several districts of Uttar Pradesh, including Mainpuri, Farrukhabad, Hapur, Bulandshahr, Bijnor, Amroha, Moradabad and Baghpat.

Most of the approved projects secured tariffs of ₹2.98 per unit through a competitive bidding process, while a few projects were approved at a tariff of ₹2.99 per unit.

Officials said the tariff discovery process was conducted through transparent competitive bidding, ensuring cost-effective power procurement while promoting renewable energy development.

Part of a Larger Solarisation Drive

The approved projects are part of UPNEDA’s larger feeder-level solarisation initiative under PM-KUSUM Component C-2. The broader programme covers more than 1,000 substations with a planned solar capacity exceeding 2,500 MW.

According to officials, the tender process attracted strong interest from developers across the country. Hundreds of bids were received, leading to the award of projects across numerous substations in the state.

The programme aims to accelerate the adoption of solar energy in the agriculture sector while reducing dependence on conventional power sources.

Capacity Under PM-KUSUM Crosses 1 GW Mark

With the latest approvals, the cumulative solar capacity approved by UPERC under the PM-KUSUM Component C-2 programme has now crossed the 1 GW milestone.

Before these approvals, the Commission had already cleared hundreds of PPAs representing more than 1,000 MW of solar capacity under the same framework. The latest additions further strengthen Uttar Pradesh’s renewable energy portfolio and support the state’s clean energy objectives.

Focus on Reliable Power for Agriculture

The PM-KUSUM scheme is designed to promote the solarisation of agricultural feeders and improve the quality of power supplied to farmers. By connecting solar plants directly to agricultural feeders, the programme aims to ensure reliable daytime electricity for irrigation and farming activities.

The initiative is also expected to reduce power procurement costs over time while increasing the share of renewable energy in the state’s electricity mix.

Supporting Uttar Pradesh’s Clean Energy Goals

While approving the PPAs, UPERC directed stakeholders to ensure timely execution of the projects so that the benefits of the scheme can reach consumers and farmers without delay.

Officials believe the projects will play an important role in strengthening renewable energy deployment, improving energy security and supporting sustainable agricultural growth across Uttar Pradesh.

The latest approvals reaffirm the state’s commitment to expanding clean energy infrastructure and leveraging solar power to meet future electricity demand in a cost-effective and environmentally sustainable manner.
