Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi has said that the rapid expansion of renewable energy, backed by large-scale deployment of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), will be instrumental in accelerating India’s green transition. Speaking at the Times Network Sustainability Conclave 2026, the minister stressed that investments in battery storage, along with solar and wind power, will make electricity more affordable while ensuring a reliable and resilient power supply.

Joshi noted that energy storage has become a critical component of India’s renewable energy strategy, as it helps store excess electricity generated from solar and wind projects and supplies it during peak demand periods. Strengthening storage infrastructure will improve grid stability, minimise renewable energy curtailment and support round-the-clock clean power availability.

The minister also highlighted India’s progress in adopting next-generation clean technologies, including battery storage and hydrogen-powered mobility solutions. He said the government’s continued focus on renewable energy, domestic manufacturing and advanced energy technologies is helping position India as one of the world’s fastest-growing clean energy markets.

According to Joshi, the combination of renewable energy expansion and modern storage infrastructure will play a key role in achieving India’s target of 500 GW of non-fossil fuel power capacity by 2030. He added that sustained public and private investment in clean energy infrastructure will strengthen energy security, reduce carbon emissions and create new economic opportunities across the country.
