The Prayagraj Municipal Corporation (PMC) is set to induct 70 electric vehicles (EVs) into its fleet as part of its efforts to make civic operations more cost-effective and environmentally sustainable. The move aims to reduce diesel consumption, lower operational expenses and promote cleaner urban mobility while strengthening municipal services across the city.

The electric vehicles will be procured in four phases, with the first batch of 15 EVs expected to be introduced in the coming months. The phased rollout will allow the corporation to gradually replace conventional fuel-powered vehicles used for various municipal operations, including sanitation, maintenance and public service activities.

According to civic officials, switching to electric mobility will significantly reduce fuel expenditure and maintenance costs while helping lower carbon emissions. The initiative aligns with the Uttar Pradesh government’s broader vision of promoting sustainable transportation and increasing the adoption of electric vehicles across urban local bodies.

The municipal corporation is also focusing on expanding supporting infrastructure for electric mobility, with efforts underway in the state to strengthen public EV charging facilities. These measures are expected to make the transition to electric vehicles smoother and encourage wider adoption of clean transportation solutions.

Urban mobility experts believe the initiative marks an important step towards modernising civic services while reducing the environmental footprint of municipal operations. As more cities embrace electric mobility, projects such as Prayagraj’s EV fleet are expected to play a key role in improving operational efficiency, cutting fuel costs and advancing India’s clean transportation goals.
