ACME Solar Holdings has expanded its battery energy storage footprint in India by commissioning an additional 35.715 MW / 160.512 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) capacity in Bikaner, Rajasthan.

The newly commissioned project, developed under ACME Surya Power Private Limited, marks another major step in the company’s renewable energy expansion strategy and comes at a time when India is aggressively promoting energy storage infrastructure to support its clean energy transition.

With this addition, ACME Solar’s total operational BESS capacity has increased to 210.938 MW / 947.899 MWh. The new facility is scheduled to begin commercial operations from May 13, 2026.

Strengthening Grid Stability and Renewable Integration

Battery Energy Storage Systems are becoming increasingly important for India’s renewable energy ecosystem as they help stabilize the power grid and improve integration of solar and wind energy.

The expansion in Rajasthan is expected to support:

  • Better management of renewable energy supply
  • Improved grid reliability
  • Enhanced energy storage during peak generation hours
  • Faster adoption of clean energy infrastructure

Industry experts say large-scale storage systems will play a critical role in balancing electricity demand and ensuring uninterrupted power supply as renewable energy capacity increases across the country.

Strong Financial Growth Supports Expansion

The latest expansion comes alongside strong financial performance by the company.

According to recent financial results:

  • FY26 revenue rose 59.2% to ₹2,507 crore
  • Profit after tax nearly doubled to ₹498 crore
  • Cash return on equity (ROE) improved to 20.1%

The market also responded positively to the development. On May 12, 2026, ACME Solar’s stock closed at ₹290.45, gaining 2.76% even as broader market indices declined.

India’s Energy Storage Market Growing Rapidly

India’s energy storage sector is witnessing rapid growth due to strong government support and ambitious renewable energy targets.

The government has introduced several policy measures, including:

  • Around ₹145 billion in Viability Gap Funding (VGF) for BESS projects
  • Production Linked Incentive (PLI) schemes for battery manufacturing
  • Policy support for renewable energy integration and domestic manufacturing

Industry projections suggest India could require nearly 2,000 GWh of battery storage capacity by 2050.

This growth has attracted major investments from companies such as Adani Energy Solutions, Tata Power and Reliance New Energy.

Competitive Market and Emerging Challenges

Despite the positive outlook, the sector continues to face intense competition and pricing pressures.

ACME Solar competes with major players including Exide Industries, Waaree Energies and Amara Raja Energy & Mobility, along with large diversified conglomerates.

Industry observers have also raised concerns over aggressive bidding and low project tariffs, which could impact long-term profitability and project sustainability.

Analysts note that while ACME Solar’s valuation remains at a premium, the company’s expanding operational portfolio and improving financial performance position it well within India’s growing clean energy market.

Focus on Long-Term Energy Transition

The company’s investment in battery storage aligns closely with India’s broader push towards renewable energy and energy security.

Apart from traditional power purchase agreements (PPAs), ACME Solar’s BESS operations are also creating new revenue opportunities through merchant power contracts, with the company reportedly generating around ₹2.2 crore per day from storage-linked operations.

With a strong project pipeline, operational expansion and increasing policy support for clean energy infrastructure, ACME Solar is expected to remain an important player in India’s evolving renewable energy and storage ecosystem.
