India’s cumulative wind energy capacity has climbed to 51.67 GW as of June 30, 2025, Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi informed Parliament on Wednesday. The sector has seen a steady rise in capacity addition over the past three years, with 2,275.55 MW added in 2023-24, 3,253.39 MW in 2024-25, and 1,637.02 MW added in the first quarter of FY 2025-26, as per data presented in the Lok Sabha.

Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka lead the country’s wind energy landscape with installed capacities of 13,816.68 MW, 11,830.36 MW, and 7,714.74 MW, respectively.

Highlighting the broader renewable energy targets, the minister noted that the government’s goal of achieving 500 GW of non-fossil fuel-based power generation by 2030 includes 340 GW from ground-mounted solar and wind, with 110 GW connected to Intra-State Transmission Systems (In-STS) and 230 GW to Inter-State Transmission Systems (ISTS).

To tap into offshore wind energy, the government notified the Offshore Wind Energy Policy in October 2015 and has since identified promising zones off the Gujarat and Tamil Nadu coasts. Significant studies—including meso-scale wind mapping, LiDAR installations, and geophysical and oceanographic assessments—have been undertaken to support 1 GW of offshore capacity off Gujarat and 500 MW off Tamil Nadu.

The Central Transmission Utility (CTU) has completed transmission planning for an initial 10 GW of offshore wind energy—5 GW each for Gujarat and Tamil Nadu. Additionally, the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) has floated the first tender to lease seabed for 4 GW of offshore wind power under captive, bilateral, and open access models.

In a major boost, the Union Cabinet has approved a ₹7,453 crore Viability Gap Funding (VGF) scheme for offshore wind projects, including ₹6,853 crore for the installation of 1 GW capacity (500 MW each off Gujarat and Tamil Nadu) and ₹600 crore for port infrastructure development to meet logistics demands.
