Green data center

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath laid the foundation stone for the CEL-ESDS Green Data Centre in Sahibabad, Ghaziabad, marking a significant milestone in the state’s digital infrastructure advancement. The ₹1,000-crore initiative is a collaboration between Central Electronics Limited (CEL), a Government of India enterprise, and ESDS Software Solution Limited, a technology firm preparing for its public listing.

The foundation-laying ceremony, held at the CEL campus in the Sahibabad Industrial Area, was graced by several dignitaries, including Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) Dr. Jitendra Singh, State IT Minister Sunil Kumar Sharma, and Social Welfare Minister Asim Arun. Speaking at the event, Chief Minister Adityanath lauded CEL’s 50-year journey and praised its transformation from a firm once facing uncertainty to a key contributor to India’s vision of becoming a developed nation.

“This state-of-the-art green data centre will be the first of its kind in the country. CEL’s evolution showcases its potential to drive digital transformation, and this collaboration with ESDS demonstrates how strategic public-private partnerships can shape the future,” Adityanath stated.

The upcoming facility will be a Tier-3 grade uptime compliant data centre, designed to meet global standards for reliability and operational efficiency. With a capacity of 30 megawatts, the data centre will house approximately 200 high-density server racks per floor and will be equipped with a robust 40 Gbps connectivity backbone. Tier-3 data centres are built to ensure an uptime of 99.982%, translating to minimal annual downtime and the ability to maintain operations during infrastructure upgrades.

Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh emphasised the historical significance of CEL, recalling its pioneering role in solar technology as early as 1977. “At a time when India had little awareness of renewable energy, CEL produced its first solar cell. This data centre is another leap forward in harnessing technology to empower our nation,” he noted. Singh further underscored the importance of private sector engagement to realise the national aspiration of “Viksit Bharat.”

The CEL-ESDS Green Data Centre aligns with India’s twin missions of “Digital India” and “Green India”. Designed to minimise environmental impact, the centre will integrate sustainable practices, energy-efficient systems, and advanced security protocols. It is expected to serve government entities, enterprises, and start-ups requiring secure, scalable, and eco-friendly data hosting solutions.

This development is poised to bolster Uttar Pradesh’s position as a digital economy enabler while attracting investment, generating employment, and promoting technological innovation in the region. Upon completion, the data centre will act as a digital backbone for both governance and enterprise applications, significantly contributing to the state’s digital transformation roadmap.
