REC Limited, a Maharatna Central Public Sector Enterprise (CPSE) under the Ministry of Power, has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Energy Management Centre (EMC), Government of Kerala, to facilitate collaboration and provide financial support for the development of Pumped Storage Projects (PSP) within the state. This agreement, designed to significantly enhance Kerala’s renewable energy infrastructure, was formalized during the prestigious Global Green Hydrogen & Renewable Energy Summit 2025, held in Kochi on March 12-13, 2025.

Under this strategic partnership, REC has committed to financing INR 18,360 crore in the PSP sector in Kerala over the next five years. This substantial investment is expected to drive the expansion of energy storage solutions, improve grid stability, and reinforce the state’s commitment to sustainable power generation.

The MoU was exchanged by Shri Saurabh Rastogi, Executive Director of REC, and Shri Dinesh Kumar, Joint Director of EMC, in the presence of several eminent officials, including Shri K.R. Jyothilal, IAS, Additional Chief Secretary (Power), Government of Kerala, and Shri M. Udaya Kumar, CPM, REC, Kerala. The signing ceremony was also attended by other distinguished dignitaries from EMC and the Kerala government, underscoring the significance of this collaboration.

The Global Green Hydrogen & Renewable Energy Summit, organized by the Government of Kerala with support from the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) and EMC, serves as a pivotal platform for discussing and promoting advancements in green energy, renewable technologies, and sustainable power solutions. The MoU between REC and the Government of Kerala is a testament to the state’s proactive approach in harnessing cutting-edge energy solutions to achieve energy security and sustainability.

Pumped Storage Projects play a crucial role in stabilizing power grids by efficiently storing excess renewable energy during periods of low demand and discharging it during peak consumption hours. By leveraging PSP technology, Kerala aims to enhance its renewable energy capacity, minimize dependency on conventional fossil fuels, and contribute significantly to India’s clean energy transition. These projects will enable efficient energy management, reducing fluctuations in power supply while ensuring the seamless integration of renewable sources like solar and wind energy.

Beyond environmental benefits, the agreement aligns with the broader national vision of accelerating renewable energy adoption and enhancing financial support for critical infrastructure projects that enhance long-term energy resilience. The infusion of funds from REC into the PSP segment is anticipated to spur economic growth by generating employment opportunities, driving industrial expansion, and incorporating innovation in green technology.

This initiative reinforces Kerala’s commitment to achieving energy self-sufficiency and reducing its carbon footprint, setting an exemplary model for other states to emulate in the pursuit of sustainable energy solutions. The development of robust energy storage infrastructure will not only enhance Kerala’s ability to manage power distribution efficiently but also create a resilient energy ecosystem capable of withstanding future demands.
