India’s solar power generation recorded a 37 per cent year-on-year increase during the first quarter of FY2026-27, reaching 57 billion units (BU) and accounting for 10.9 per cent of the country’s total electricity generation. This marks the first time solar energy has contributed more than one in every ten units of electricity generated during the April-June quarter, highlighting the rapid pace of India’s renewable energy transition.
According to the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA), India generated a record 524 billion units of electricity in the first quarter of FY27, a 9 per cent increase over the same period last year. Solar power alone contributed 36 per cent of the incremental growth in electricity generation, a significant jump from just 11 per cent during the corresponding quarter of FY25.

While coal and lignite continued to supply around 70 per cent of the country’s electricity, their contribution to generation growth has begun to decline as renewable energy gains momentum. The report reflects India’s expanding solar capacity and the growing role of clean energy in meeting rising power demand.
The milestone comes amid record additions in solar capacity and continued government support for renewable energy deployment. Industry experts believe sustained investments in solar projects, energy storage and transmission infrastructure will be critical to maintaining this growth and integrating larger volumes of renewable power into the national grid.

The latest figures reinforce India’s position as one of the world’s fastest-growing solar markets and underscore the sector’s increasing importance in achieving the country’s long-term energy security and net-zero ambitions.
