NPCIL Invites Bids for Engineering and 3D Design of Bharat Small Reactors

The Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) has invited bids from engineering consultants for plant engineering and three-dimensional (3D) design services for its proposed 220 MW Bharat Small Reactors (BSRs). The tender represents another milestone in India’s efforts to accelerate the development of indigenous small nuclear reactors for industrial and clean energy applications.

The selected consultant will be responsible for detailed plant engineering, digital 3D modelling and design integration of the Bharat Small Reactor project. These services will support the planning and execution of the compact reactors, which are based on India’s proven pressurised heavy water reactor technology and are intended to deliver reliable, low-carbon electricity.

The Bharat Small Reactor programme is aimed at supplying captive power to energy-intensive industries while supporting India’s broader clean energy and decarbonisation goals. By using indigenous technology and modern digital engineering tools, NPCIL expects to improve construction efficiency, optimise plant design and reduce project timelines.

The latest tender follows NPCIL’s ongoing engagement with industry to expand private sector participation in the Bharat Small Reactor initiative. The programme is expected to complement renewable energy by providing round-the-clock, carbon-free electricity for industrial operations and strengthening India’s long-term energy security.

Energy experts believe the engineering and 3D design phase is a critical step before construction activities begin. As India continues to diversify its clean energy portfolio, Bharat Small Reactors are expected to play an important role in meeting rising electricity demand while supporting the country’s transition towards a low-carbon economy.
