Uttar Pradesh Becomes India's Second-Largest Rooftop Solar State Under PM Surya Ghar

Uttar Pradesh has overtaken Maharashtra to become India’s second-largest state in residential rooftop solar installations under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana. With more than 6.74 lakh rooftop solar systems installed, the state now ranks behind only Gujarat, reflecting the rapid pace of clean energy adoption across households.

The surge in installations has significantly reduced electricity expenses for consumers. According to state officials, households in Uttar Pradesh are collectively saving around ₹6.5 crore every day on electricity bills, highlighting the economic benefits of rooftop solar alongside its environmental impact.

The achievement has been driven by the implementation of the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, which provides financial assistance for residential rooftop solar systems. Strong support from the Uttar Pradesh New and Renewable Energy Development Agency (UPNEDA), simplified installation processes and growing public awareness have helped accelerate adoption across both urban and semi-urban areas.

Officials said the expansion of rooftop solar is reducing dependence on conventional power sources while enabling families to generate clean electricity from their homes. The initiative is also contributing to lower carbon emissions and supporting India’s broader renewable energy and energy security goals.

With rooftop solar installations continuing to rise, Uttar Pradesh is emerging as one of India’s leading clean energy states. The milestone reinforces the growing role of distributed solar power in meeting the country’s renewable energy ambitions while making electricity more affordable for millions of households.
