Ethanol could soon become a common cooking fuel in Indian households as the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas is working on a policy framework to introduce ethanol-based cooking systems across the country. The initiative is aimed at expanding the use of domestically produced biofuels while reducing dependence on imported liquefied petroleum gas (LPG).

The proposed move is part of the government’s broader strategy to diversify India’s household energy mix and promote cleaner, more sustainable fuels. Industry executives familiar with the discussions said the policy could pave the way for ethanol-powered cooking stoves to become a viable alternative in homes, particularly as India continues to strengthen its biofuel ecosystem.

India has significantly expanded ethanol production over the past decade through its successful ethanol blending programme in the transport sector. With production capacity continuing to grow, policymakers are now exploring new avenues for ethanol use beyond automobiles, creating additional demand while improving the country’s energy security.

Experts believe ethanol-based cooking could offer environmental benefits by lowering emissions and reducing reliance on fossil fuels. If supported by appropriate infrastructure, affordable cooking appliances and a reliable fuel distribution network, the transition could also provide consumers with another clean cooking option alongside LPG.
