Kolkata Metro has commissioned a 500 kWp rooftop solar power plant at Jessore Road Metro Station, marking another step towards making the city’s public transport system more energy efficient and environmentally sustainable. The project is part of Metro Railway’s ongoing efforts to expand the use of renewable energy across its network and reduce dependence on conventional electricity.
The solar plant is expected to generate nearly 1,800 units of clean electricity every day, helping meet a significant portion of the station’s energy requirements while reducing annual electricity costs. The initiative will also contribute to lowering carbon emissions, supporting India’s broader clean energy and climate goals.

Officials said the project reflects Metro Railway’s commitment to integrating renewable energy into urban transport infrastructure. Similar solar installations have already been commissioned across various metro depots and stations, with additional projects planned to further increase the network’s solar power generation capacity.
The rooftop solar plant forms part of Kolkata Metro’s long-term sustainability strategy, which focuses on reducing operational costs while promoting greener modes of public transportation. By generating clean electricity on-site, the metro network aims to improve energy efficiency and lessen its environmental footprint.
