Dhanbad

The Dhanbad district administration has launched a stringent crackdown on illegal coal mining activities across multiple locations in Jharkhand’s coal belt region. The renewed action follows rising concerns over unauthorised extraction, safety risks, and the involvement of organised networks in illegal mining.

Officials reported that multiple joint teams,  including the district police, CISF personnel, and representatives from Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL), have been deployed to identify active illegal mining spots, seal unsafe pits, and prevent the movement of illegally mined coal. Heavy machinery was reportedly used in several sites to destroy makeshift shafts and block unauthorised entry points used by illegal miners.

Preliminary estimates indicate that illegal extraction in the region has been taking place in abandoned or temporarily closed mines, posing a serious threat to human life due to the risk of land subsidence, methane explosions, and pit collapses. Local authorities have also highlighted the environmental damage caused by unregulated mining in these zones.

Senior district officials have stated that surveillance has been significantly increased, and more inspections will follow to ensure illegal mining does not resume after enforcement teams withdraw. Identifying the local networks and individuals involved both on the ground and through supply chains is also part of the ongoing investigation.

The crackdown reflects a broader push by the administration to safeguard operational coal infrastructure, reduce losses to the exchequer, and protect public safety while discouraging repeat activity in high-risk mining zones.
