Patratu Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited (PVUNL), a subsidiary of NTPC Limited, has commenced commercial operations of Unit 1 of its 800 MW Patratu Super Thermal Power Project located in Ramgarh district, Jharkhand.
The newly operational unit features advanced super-critical technology, an air-cooled condenser for reduced water consumption, and a fully dry ash system to promote efficient ash utilisation. This development marks a significant milestone in strengthening the region’s power infrastructure and advancing cleaner, more efficient thermal energy generation.

PVUNL is a joint venture between NTPC (holding 74 % stake) and Jharkhand Bijli Vitran Nigam Limited (holding 26 %). The Patratu project is part of a larger 3×800 MW Phase-I expansion aimed at meeting rising power demand in eastern India.
Under the existing power purchase agreement, Jharkhand will receive 85 % of the electricity generated from the unit, ensuring greater energy reliability for the state. The project reinforces NTPC Group’s commitment to India’s energy security and sustainable growth goals.
