The Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) has invited Expressions of Interest (EoIs) to identify reliable carbon dioxide (CO₂) suppliers for upcoming green urea and RFNBO-compliant green methanol projects. The initiative is designed to map available CO₂ sources across the country and support the development of sustainable fuels under India’s clean energy transition strategy.

Green urea and green methanol are produced by combining green hydrogen with captured carbon dioxide, making CO₂ a critical feedstock for these emerging industries. Through this exercise, SECI will assess the availability, quality, location and logistics of CO₂ from a range of potential sources, including industrial emissions, biogenic sources and direct air capture technologies.

The initiative supports India’s broader ambitions under the National Green Hydrogen Mission by creating a robust supply chain for renewable fuels. While green urea is expected to help reduce dependence on imported fertilisers, RFNBO-compliant green methanol is being positioned as a low-carbon fuel for export markets and hard-to-abate industrial sectors.

According to the tender issued by SECI, the exercise is intended to identify suitable CO₂ sources and evaluate infrastructure requirements for future commercial-scale projects. The EoI process will also help policymakers and project developers understand regional availability of carbon dioxide, transportation needs and integration opportunities for green fuel production facilities.

Industry experts believe the initiative marks an important step towards building India’s green chemicals ecosystem. By securing dependable CO₂ supply chains alongside renewable hydrogen production, the country can accelerate domestic manufacturing of green fuels, attract investments in clean technologies and strengthen its position as a global hub for sustainable energy products.
