Hyundai Motor India is gearing up to strengthen its presence in the country’s electric mobility market with plans to launch its first mass-market electric vehicle (EV) from its Chennai manufacturing facility in 2026.
The company has announced that it will introduce two new models from its Tamil Nadu plant this year, including a dedicated EV aimed at making electric mobility more accessible to Indian consumers. The move forms part of Hyundai’s broader strategy to expand local manufacturing, enhance EV infrastructure and strengthen its position in India’s rapidly evolving automobile market.
Chennai to Play a Central Role in EV Plans
Hyundai has identified Tamil Nadu as the cornerstone of its electric vehicle manufacturing and development strategy in India. The company plans to leverage its Chennai facility to drive the next phase of EV growth, supported by investments in production capabilities and localisation of key components.
According to company officials, the upcoming electric vehicle will mark Hyundai’s first mass-market EV specifically developed for Indian consumers, reflecting the growing demand for affordable and practical electric mobility solutions.
The initiative is expected to further strengthen Chennai’s position as one of India’s leading automotive manufacturing hubs.
Expanding Charging Infrastructure
As part of its long-term EV roadmap, Hyundai is also focusing on building a stronger charging ecosystem across the country.
The company plans to expand its network of high-capacity charging stations in major cities and along important highway corridors over the next few years. Officials believe that improving charging accessibility is essential to encouraging wider EV adoption and addressing concerns related to charging convenience.
By strengthening charging infrastructure, Hyundai aims to support consumers transitioning from conventional vehicles to electric mobility.
Localisation at the Core of EV Strategy
A major focus area for Hyundai is increasing the localisation of electric vehicle components and reducing dependence on imported parts.
The company has already established a battery sub-assembly facility in Tamil Nadu for EV powertrains and is working towards greater local production of power electronics and other critical components.
Industry experts note that localisation not only helps reduce manufacturing costs but also supports the development of a stronger domestic EV supply chain and creates new opportunities for local industries.
Skill Development Initiative with Tamil Nadu Government
Alongside its manufacturing expansion, Hyundai has announced a partnership with the Tamil Nadu Government to promote skill development in emerging mobility technologies.
The initiative aims to equip young people with industry-relevant skills and prepare them for future opportunities in electric mobility and advanced automotive technologies. The programme is expected to become operational by the end of 2027.

The company believes workforce development will play a crucial role in supporting the transition towards electric and technology-driven transportation systems.
Tamil Nadu Remains a Key Manufacturing Base
Hyundai highlighted the importance of Tamil Nadu in its global operations, noting that its Chennai facility has been a major production and export hub for decades.
Vehicles manufactured at the plant have been exported to more than 150 countries, reinforcing the state’s significance within Hyundai’s international manufacturing network.
With new investments in electric mobility, localisation and workforce development, the company is looking to build on this foundation while contributing to India’s growing EV ecosystem.
Strengthening India’s Electric Mobility Future
The planned launch of Hyundai’s first mass-market EV represents a significant step in the company’s efforts to expand its electric vehicle portfolio in India. Combined with investments in local manufacturing, charging infrastructure and skill development, the initiative aligns with the broader industry shift towards cleaner and more sustainable transportation solutions.
As demand for electric vehicles continues to rise, Hyundai’s Chennai facility is expected to play a pivotal role in supporting the company’s growth ambitions and advancing India’s electric mobility journey.
