Kerala has created history by becoming the first state in India to introduce a comprehensive Environment, Social and Governance (ESG) policy, aimed at mainstreaming sustainability and ethical governance in industrial and entrepreneurial activities.

The ESG policy has been designed to attract investments aligned with global sustainability principles while positioning Kerala as a leading destination for responsible and transparent business practices. The cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, highlighted that ESG has become a central focus for investment decisions globally and stressed the need for Kerala to align its growth trajectory with these evolving standards.

According to the Chief Minister’s Office, the policy is rooted in the understanding that industries which are environmentally friendly and relatively low in pollution are better suited for Kerala’s ecosystem. The framework will ensure enterprises remain accountable to environmental, social, and governance standards, while being supported through extensive financial and institutional backing.

Industries Minister P Rajeeve said the introduction of such a comprehensive ESG framework demonstrates Kerala’s commitment to strengthening its industrial base without compromising sustainability. He emphasised that the policy would help strike a balance between economic growth and social responsibility, making the state a preferred hub for ESG-compliant industries.

In addition, the cabinet approved waiving the advance payment guarantee provision linked to the Wayanad Township project, following a request from the project’s special officer. This move is expected to provide flexibility in project implementation while aligning with broader development goals.
