In a remarkable stride towards decentralised renewable energy adoption, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has revealed the top three performing states under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana as of July 14, 2025. Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Uttar Pradesh have emerged as frontrunners in solar rooftop installations, collectively demonstrating India’s accelerating transition towards clean energy at the household level.
According to MNRE’s latest Statistical Snapshot, Gujarat continues to lead the solar rooftop revolution with an impressive 5,23,615 households benefited and 3,83,487 kW of solar installations. The state’s early investment in solar policies, combined with proactive implementation by local authorities and Village Energy Committees, has enabled widespread public adoption across urban and rural segments alike.
Maharashtra follows closely, registering 3,71,954 households benefited with 2,31,631 kW of rooftop installations. The state has seen significant uptake in both residential and semi-urban sectors, thanks to extensive awareness campaigns and streamlined subsidy disbursement mechanisms under the PM Surya Ghar scheme.
Uttar Pradesh, with 1,64,646 households benefited and 1,63,324 kW installed capacity, stands as a fast-emerging leader in the sector. The state has shown notable progress in rural electrification via rooftop solutions, playing a critical role in reducing grid dependency while enhancing local energy resilience.
The PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, launched by the Government of India to promote solar power adoption among residential users, offers financial support and incentives to install rooftop solar systems. The scheme aims to empower citizens to generate their clean energy, significantly reduce electricity bills, and contribute to the national goal of net-zero emissions.
The MNRE’s infographic highlights not just energy generation, but the human impact behind these numbers—millions of Indian households experiencing energy independence and improved quality of life. It serves as a testament to what effective policy execution, public awareness, and collaborative governance can achieve in the renewable sector.
As part of its Weekly Statistical Snapshot Series, MNRE continues to decode and disseminate progress updates to ensure transparency, stakeholder engagement, and informed public discourse. This data-driven approach reinforces the centrality of rooftop solar in India’s broader clean energy strategy.
With continued state-level leadership and citizen participation, the rooftop solar mission is expected to accelerate further, pushing India closer to its vision of energy security, environmental sustainability, and equitable access to electricity.
