In a bid to secure energy supplies during a narrow geopolitical window, India has urged Iran to accelerate the shipment of oil and gas cargoes following the announcement of a temporary ceasefire in West Asia.
The request comes in the backdrop of a two-week ceasefire between the United States and Iran, which has partially eased tensions and reopened critical maritime routes such as the Strait of Hormuz, a vital artery for global energy trade.
According to officials, India is pushing for faster cargo movement to maximise the limited ceasefire period and ensure the timely delivery of fuel supplies. The aim is to enable quicker turnaround of shipments and bolster domestic energy availability amid recent disruptions.
The urgency reflects the significant impact that the ongoing conflict has had on global oil logistics. Disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz had previously constrained supplies, leading to volatility in crude markets and concerns over fuel shortages across major importing nations, including India.

India, one of the world’s largest oil importers, has been actively recalibrating its sourcing strategy to maintain energy security. The ceasefire has provided a temporary opportunity to restore flows, including the potential resumption of Iranian crude shipments after years of limited trade due to sanctions and geopolitical tensions. However, industry observers caution that the situation remains fluid. While the ceasefire has brought short-term relief and a decline in oil prices, uncertainties around maritime safety, insurance, and long-term stability in the region continue to pose risks to sustained supply recovery.
