NTPC Ltd, India’s largest power generation company, has entered into collaboration with Rosatom of Russia and Électricité de France (EDF) of France to explore partnerships on large nuclear reactor projects, officials said on Tuesday.
The development comes as the country seeks to boost its nuclear power capacity to meet rising electricity demand while advancing its climate goals. Nuclear energy is viewed by policymakers as a reliable and low-carbon source of baseload power, complementing solar and wind generation.
Under the tie-up, NTPC will work with Rosatom and EDF to assess opportunities for deploying large nuclear reactors in India. Discussions are expected to cover feasibility, technology options, regulatory needs and potential financing structures for future nuclear projects.
Nuclear power currently contributes a modest share to India’s energy mix, but the government has been pushing to scale up capacity through domestic and international partnerships. The collaboration with Rosatom and EDF reflects growing interest from global players to participate in India’s nuclear growth story.
An NTPC official said the partnership “aims to leverage international expertise and best practices to support India’s long-term nuclear ambitions” while ensuring safety, technology transfer and cost-effective implementation.
Both Rosatom and EDF are experienced operators and builders of large nuclear reactors in their respective regions and globally. Their involvement could bring advanced technology insights as India looks to expand indigenous nuclear manufacturing and project execution capabilities.

The three organisations will continue detailed discussions in the coming months, with a view to identifying specific project opportunities and framework agreements. The move is expected to accelerate plans for next-generation nuclear capacity and support India’s transition toward cleaner energy sources.
