The Uttar Pradesh government has approved the establishment of a Centre of Excellence in Green Hydrogen under the Uttar Pradesh Green Hydrogen Policy-2024. It is to be jointly developed by the Indian Institute of Technology (BHU), Varanasi, and the Madan Mohan Malaviya University of Technology (MMMUT), Gorakhpur. The approval was granted by the Uttar Pradesh New & Renewable Energy Development Agency (UPNEDA) as part of the state’s effort to advance clean-energy research, technology innovation, and industrial deployment of green hydrogen solutions.
The Centre will focus on research and development across multiple domains of hydrogen technology, including hydrogen production, storage, transport and utilisation. A key emphasis will be on biomass-based hydrogen production, reflecting the region’s abundant biomass resources and the potential for cost-effective, sustainable hydrogen generation. The initiative also aims to explore other emerging methods and applications of green hydrogen as part of a comprehensive clean-energy ecosystem.
In addition to core R&D, the Centre of Excellence will support capacity building and human-resource development by training students, faculty and workforce from engineering colleges and technical institutes across the region. It will operate on a hub-and-spoke model, with IIT-BHU serving as the lead institution providing strategic planning, technical mentoring and curriculum support, while MMMUT hosts substantial portions of the infrastructure and implementation activities.

A notable component of the programme includes proposed pilot projects for hydrogen-powered mobility, such as a hydrogen-fuelled train between Varanasi and Gorakhpur in collaboration with the Ministry of Railways, as well as hydrogen buses to be deployed by the Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (UPSRTC) along the same corridor. These initiatives aim to demonstrate real-world applications of hydrogen technology in clean mobility and logistics.
The Centre is also expected to establish an incubation hub to nurture startups and entrepreneurs in the green hydrogen and clean-energy space, thereby strengthening innovation and industrial engagement. Additionally, it will provide policy inputs and technical advisories to the state government, supporting evidence-based decisions on hydrogen production, storage, transportation and utilisation to guide future clean energy planning in Uttar Pradesh.
