President Draupadi Murmu has underscored the critical importance of energy conservation in India’s pursuit of a sustainable and low-carbon future, highlighting the role that efficient energy use can play in cutting emissions and protecting the environment. She made these remarks while addressing dignitaries and participants at the National Energy Conservation Awards, organised to commemorate India’s efforts toward responsible energy consumption.

In her address, President Murmu stressed that energy efficiency and conservation are as important as expanding energy supply, especially as India scales up its renewable energy capacity and works to balance economic growth with environmental stewardship. She called on citizens, industry, institutions and governments to embrace energy-saving practices as a collective responsibility.

Quoting from her speech, she said, “Every unit of energy we save will be a symbol of our responsibility towards nature and our sensitivity towards future generations.” The President highlighted that mindful energy use not only reduces greenhouse gas emissions but also conserves valuable natural resources and lowers overall energy demand, creating long-term economic and environmental benefits.

President Murmu noted that energy conservation must go hand in hand with technological innovation, policy support, and public awareness. She pointed to initiatives encouraging energy-efficient technologies in buildings, appliances, industry and transport, saying that systematic adoption of such measures can significantly reduce India’s carbon footprint.

The programme also brought attention to the broader framework of India’s climate goals, including commitments under the Paris Agreement and national missions aimed at expanding sustainable energy infrastructure. Officials said that energy conservation measures are being integrated into these plans to ensure that growth trajectories remain aligned with climate resilience and sustainability objectives.

President Murmu’s remarks reaffirmed the message that energy efficiency is not just a technical necessity but a shared social and environmental commitment, one that requires participation from all sectors of society to drive meaningful and lasting impact.
