The Solar Energy Corporation of India Ltd (SECI) and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the deployment of solar power plants along the elevated portion of Package 1 (Delhi segment) of the Delhi–Saharanpur–Dehradun Highway (NH-709B), under Phase-1 of the project. The ceremony was held in the presence of Minister of State for Corporate Affairs & Road Transport and Highways, Harsh Malhotra.
The agreement aims to harness the roof and elevated-structure space of the highway to generate clean energy, thereby reducing greenhouse gas emissions while utilising prime infrastructure land for dual purposes. The partnership between SECI and NHAI is positioned as a pioneering model of sustainable infrastructure that blends national highway development with renewable-energy production.

Officials noted that this initiative not only supports India’s target of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2070 but also lays the groundwork for integrating solar-energy systems with critical transport corridors. The government emphasised that such collaborations represent a shift towards infrastructure that is both functional and environmentally conscious.
The project is expected to accelerate the deployment of distributed solar capacity along the highway corridor, improve land-use efficiency, and contribute to grid stability. The MoU underscores the commitment of both agencies to drive innovation in the nation’s infrastructure and energy ecosystems.
